Heinz Wagner (painter)

Heinz Wagner (born December 11, 1925 in Menteroda ; † June 7, 2003 near Jesewitz ) was a German painter .

Life

Heinz Wagner completed a professional training as a decorative painter and then studied at the University of Architecture and Fine Arts Weimar . In 1952 he began teaching at the University of Graphic Art and Book Art in Leipzig , where he led the painting and graphic arts class from 1953. In 1965 he was appointed professor . From 1961 to 1967 and from 1976 to 1985 he was the university's prorector . In 1991 he retired .

Heinz Wagner died in a car accident near Jesewitz near Leipzig.

Works

In the beginning, Heinz Wagner worked mainly figuratively and objectively and later increasingly abstract . Much of his work was created using the spatula technique .

Heinz Wagner was best known for his portraits of contemporary personalities. In 1971 he created the portrait of the former rector of Leipzig University , Georg Mayer, without commission . This painting was the starting point for a number of other portraits of university rectors, of which Wagner also portrayed Wilhelm Wundt (1978), Julius Lips , Lothar Rathmann , Hans-Georg Gadamer (1996) and Cornelius Weiss (1999). These works are now among the art treasures of the University of Leipzig . In 1993, the University Senate decided to add portraits of all the rectors who have been working since the reopening in 1946 to this collection.

Portraits of female athletes by Heinz Wagner are also known, for example by Erika Zuchold (1968), Kornelia Ender (1977) and Katarina Witt (1986).
