Career

Steinicke completed a degree in mathematics and computer science at the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster , which he graduated with a diploma in 2002. He obtained his doctorate in 2006 at the chair for visualization and computer graphics at the University of Münster on the subject of multimodal interaction metaphors. In 2009 he took up a visiting professorship at the University of Minnesota . He completed his habilitation on effective virtual environments in 2010. Frederick P. Brooks was one of the reviewers for his habilitation. From 2011 to 2014 he held the professorship for media informatics at the Institute for Informatics at the Julius Maximilians University of Würzburg and headed the associated research group Immersive Media. Between 2012 and 2014 he was Managing Director of the Institute for Human-Computer-Media at the University of Würzburg. Since 2018 he has headed the computer science department at the University of Hamburg.

His interdisciplinary research in human-computer interaction combines aspects from psychology, in particular from perception, cognition and motor skills, with IT-technical methods with a focus on the areas of 3D user interfaces and virtual and augmented reality.

In a laboratory study carried out by him in 2014, he was the first person to enter a virtual world with a head-mounted display for 24 hours in a self-experiment .

From 2004 to 2018, more than 150 journal, book and conference articles were published that were written by Steinicke as part of his academic work or in which he was significantly involved.

Before his academic career, Steinicke was a handball player at TV Emsdetten , for which the backcourt player played in the handball Bundesliga between the 1993/94 and 1998/99 seasons, and at TuS Spenge , where he played in the handball Bundesliga and regional league of the 1999/2000 season until 2006/07 season.
