Frank Cary

Frank Taylor Cary (born December 14, 1920 in Gooding , Idaho , † January 1, 2006 in Darien , Connecticut ) was an American manager. Cary was Chairman (1973–1983) and CEO (1973–1981) of IBM .

Life

Cary graduated from UCLA and received a Masters of Business Administration from Stanford University . In 1948, Cary joined IBM in marketing in Los Angeles . After various positions within the company, he became General Manager in 1973 . Under the leadership of Cary, among other things, IBM's effort to trump XEROX in the copier business was entered into and investments were made in satellite communications. In 1981 the IBM PC was introduced under the leadership of Cary; in the same year John R. Opel took over the position of CEO. In 1989, Cary was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .

Cary died in his sleep for some unknown reason.
