Frank Worth
Frank Worth (born 1923 in New York City , † 2000 in Los Angeles ) was an American photographer .
Life
Worth grew up in New York City. Fascinated by the big stars of the film of that time, he moved to Hollywood when he was a teenager . As a self-taught photographer, he found access to the city's renowned film studios from 1939 onwards. He soon managed to build personal friendships with some of the dream factory's most popular actors. A series by Rita Hayworth was one of his first star portraits . On May 6, 1950, he filmed Elizabeth Taylor's first wedding to hotelier Conrad Nicholson Hilton, Jr. Soon James Dean , Marilyn Monroe and Sammy Davis, Jr. followed , in a manner that was completely untypical for the time, and in very private moments in black and white.
These pictures were made possible by a deep trust of the film greats in him, who promised never to publish his pictures. The photographer therefore ultimately led a life of poverty. Only posthumously was a collection of around 10,000 negatives found in his estate, in a nursing home in Los Angeles . The auction house Christie's in London put this at ten million US dollars. His oeuvre made him one of the most important photo artists of his time.
