Frankfurter Brüche (officially Frankfurter Brüche SE von Rödelsee , also old quarry on Schwanberg near Rödelsee ) is a nature reserve and geotope in the district of Rödelsee in the Lower Franconian district of Kitzingen .
Geographical location
The quarries can be found on a hiking trail between Rödelsee and the Schwanberg Steigerwald elevation . The breaks are in the extreme southeast of the Rödelsee district. The area of the city of Iphofen begins further south . To the east, further uphill, the Schwanberg district can be found on the mountain of the same name. Further to the west, the mountain is occupied by vineyards. The geotope is part of the semi-dry grassland nature reserve on the Schwanberg .
description
In the upper part of the exposed wall, gray, red and green clay and marl rocks of the so-called Lehrberg layers present themselves at the quarries . These outcrops are so typical of the Steigerwald that they were called the " Steigerwald Formation " by the German Stratigraphic Commission . Within the layers also often recur bands of white fibrous gypsum on (Mountain gypsum). Reed sandstone is also less common.
Development
The former quarries were still in operation in the first half of the 20th century. The area was named after the former headquarters of the quarrying company in Frankfurt am Main . In the meantime the fractures have partially grown over and filled. However, some narrow footpaths allow exploration at least in the period of low vegetation. The breaks have been used more often as excursion, research and teaching objects.
