Frankie Chavez (* 1980 in Lisbon ) is a Portuguese singer and musician. His music, which is characterized by blues and folk , can be assigned to the Americana style.

Life

He started playing the guitar at the age of nine, the youngest of four music-loving brothers. His mother then induced him to take guitar lessons. After he had a punk band as a teenager, he became a student guitarist in the later successful band Toranja . Before that, however, he left the band at the end of 2001 and went to Barcelona as an Erasmus exchange student for four months , where he took jazz guitar lessons at the Taller de Musics music school. After his return, he performed as part of the duo França & Mandala in bars in the nightlife district of Bairro Alto for a year and a half before moving to Australia. There he was active as a street musician, rediscovered his love for the blues and began to play slide guitar . In 2006 his piece Slight Delay was featured in the documentary Flavors , an Australian film about surfing in Indonesia .

After returning to Portugal, he founded the Portuguese-language band Beringela Amarela, with whom he performed for over two years. In 2009 Chavez was involved in the music for the award-winning documentary Pare, Escute, Olhe . Francisco Faria, a studio producer who then invited Frankie Chavez to record his own pieces in English, was largely responsible for the film music. In 2009 the solo career began under his stage name Frankie Chavez. The recordings were released in 2010 as CD-EP in the Optimus newcomer series , overseen by radio DJ and music journalist Henrique Amaro .

In 2012 his first album Family Tree was released , and he played a number of concerts in the Netherlands, a. a. in Paradiso (Amsterdam) . He also performed at Canadian Music Week 2012, and his album was subsequently released in Central Europe through Dutch and German distributors. In Germany he accompanied Beth Hart on her tour in 2013, for example in Bonn .

His second album was already successfully financed by crowdfunding in 2013 and was published by Universal in 2014 .

He is considered to be an innovative new blues artist, to whom the various influences from blues and folk can be heard, but who develops his own style that defies simple characterization with just one name. For example, he sometimes plays the Portuguese guitar , but in an atypical way and tuned differently.
