František Miller

František Miller (born January 27, 1902 in Kročehlavy , † January 14, 1983 in Brno ) was a Czech zoologist .

Life

After attending secondary school in Rakovník , Miller studied at the Faculty of Science at Charles University . From 1929 he taught at the Pedagogy in Štubnianské Teplice . In 1938 Miller received his doctorate from Charles University and in 1939 he was appointed high school professor in Žilina . After the proclamation of the First Slovak Republic , he had to leave the country and taught at the Jindřichův Hradec secondary school from September 1, 1939 . In the autumn of 1940 the grammar school was relocated to Soběslav because the grammar school building in Jindřichův Hradec was seized by the Wehrmacht as a hospital. From September 1, 1943, Müller taught at the State Coeducational Pedagogy Soběslav, whose director he became after the end of the Second World War. In 1945 and 1946 Miller was also chairman of the Local National Committee (MNV) in Soběslav. In 1947 Miller was the editor of the Soběslav City Museum's anniversary publication. In the same year he completed his habilitation and took on a lectureship at the Agricultural University (VŠZ) in Brno. There he was later appointed professor of zoology and given the chair of agricultural entomology and phytopathology at the Faculty of Agriculture. Miller was Dean from 1951 to 1954, then Rector of VŠZ between 1954 and 1958 .

As a university lecturer and researcher, he had a decisive influence on arachnology in Czechoslovakia and, among other things, organized an international arachnological congress in Brno in 1971 . After that, the Arachnological Section of the Slovak Entomological Society was founded in his honor between 1972 and 1974 .
