The Franz Josef Strauss Bridge is the youngest bridge over the Danube in the urban area of Passau and relieves the pressure on the Schanzl Bridge, which is four kilometers into town . The bridge is designed as a tied arch bridge and connects the two districts of Heining and Hacklberg at river kilometer 2230.10 .

The bridge is of supraregional importance as part of the federal highway B 12 with connection to the A 3 . In addition, it connects the federal highways B 8 (right of the Danube) and B 85 (left of the Danube).

The structure with a length of around 159 m was planned and built within three years, the road was opened in 1989. During the planning and construction phase, it was called "Steinbachmühlbrücke" after a sawmill right next to the bridge named after the former Bavarian Prime Minister Franz Josef Strauss .
