Franz-Josef Wagner (born May 6, 1885 in Cochem , † August 9, 1972 in Bonn ) was a German teacher and church composer .

Life

Franz-Josef Wagner's parents were the engine driver Josef Wagner and Katharina Bidgenbach. He was the second of five children. His stage name was Wagner-Cochem . Musically he was influenced by his mother, whose family sang and made music a lot. Improvised and polyphonic singing were practiced. He made his own attempts at harmony on the piano at an early age. From 1897 he lived in the boys' boarding school (Bischöfliches Konvikt ) in Prüm and attended the local grammar school. He passed his school leaving examination in 1905. Then followed his university studies in Munich and Bonn with the subjects classical philology , philosophy , musicology , German studies and psychology . In 1910 the doctorate followed with contributions to the music theory of Arthur Schopenhauer . In 1911 he passed the state examination in German and classical philosophy.

Franz-Josef Wagner started out as a professor at the Kaiserin-Augusta-Gymnasium in Koblenz . From 1918 he continued to work in Cologne, Jülich and until 1938 in Euskirchen. After the war he worked in Oberkassel until his retirement in 1952.

Retired from teaching, he was able to devote himself entirely to music and composition. Musically, in his mostly sacred compositions, he sought a connection between the Richard Wagnerian leitmotif and Gregorian melodies. His musical life's work comprises 17 masses and around 60 other compositions, such as B. motets , cantatas , psalm settings, organ works, orchestral works, song settings, requiems and blessings. Multi-choir participation with the participation of the congregation was important to him.
