Franz Anton Brentano (born June 28, 1840 in Frankfurt am Main , † February 20, 1888 in Rome ) was a German genre and portrait painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Franz was the third of seven children of Georg Franz Melchior Brentano (1801–1853), a businessman in Frankfurt, and his wife Lilla Pfeifer (1813–1868), sister of the Cologne sugar manufacturer ( Pfeifer & Langen ) Emil Pfeifer . The grandfather, who was also his godfather, was the Frankfurt merchant Franz Brentano .

Franz Brentano began studying painting at the age of 35. He studied at the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1875 to 1878, at which time he lived in the house of Albert Kindler's widow at Goltsteinstrasse 18. From 1878 to 1881 he was a member of the Düsseldorf paint box . Brentano later worked in Munich and Rome, mostly painting portraits of exotic beauties.

Franz von Lenbach created a portrait of Brentano in Rome in 1884, which came into the collections of the Städel Art Institute in Frankfurt.

After a long period of suffering, Brentano died in Rome in 1888 at the age of 47.
