Franz Aubell

Franz Aubell (born February 21, 1878 in Graz , † May 5, 1954 ) was an Austrian geodesist. He was a professor for field measurement and markings at the Montan University Leoben.

Life

Aubell was the son of a print shop owner and, after graduating from high school in Graz, studied civil engineering at the TH Graz from 1896 . In 1904 he received his doctorate there with a dissertation on geodesy . Then he was assistant to the geodesist Adolf Klingatsch (1864–1926). From 1904 to 1910 he also studied theoretical physics and astronomy in Graz . He worked as a mine separator in various Austrian mines. In 1911 he succeeded Florian Lederer (1876-1910) as professor of geodesy in Leoben, initially as associate professor , from 1917 as full professor . He introduced higher geodesy and photogrammetry as subjects and founded his own faculty for mine surveying in 1919/20 . 1917–1920 and 1931/32 he was rector . He improved surveying equipment and published, for example, about compensation calculations and dealt with the history of geodesy. Due to the high load of teaching, he was unable to complete or implement many publication projects. In 1927 he was elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina . In 1930 he founded the Austrian Markscheid Association. In 1950 he was appointed councilor .

He was married to the industrialist daughter Berta Krempl and had three children. A son was killed in Russia in 1943. He was chairman of the Leoben Music Association and the student support association. As a student he became a member of the Gothia Graz choir. The Corps ore awarded him the 1951 Corp loop .
