Franz Bartisch

Franz Bartisch (born November 21, 1897 in Vienna , Austria ; † January 31, 1948 in Vienna) was an Austrian engineer , motorcycle mechanic , specialist in engine tuning and founder of the Bartisch mechanical workshop (1926–1928, Vienna).

Constructions and developments

The 500 cc vertical shaft motor released by the Bartisch company in 1928, the cylinder head of which was fully encapsulated. The entire valve mechanism worked in an oil bath connected to circulating lubrication.

In 1926, Bartisch was one of the first to develop and build a 350 cm³ OHC motor with an overhead camshaft and chain drive, years before AJS established this type of drive.

The design principle of the chain-driven overhead camshaft was well known in 1926, but at that time no motorcycle of this design was for sale in Austria, because the "Kettel" -AJS, with which the term for this camshaft drive is synonymous, was only presented in London in spring 1927 . The upright shaft motor was just as advanced with its technology as the Kettel bar table.

In 1928 his second engine was ready. The vertical shaft motor with a displacement of 500 cm³ had valves completely enclosed in the oil-cooled cylinder head, a replaceable cylinder liner and circulating lubrication with an oil tank located under the crankcase . The engine was built as a prototype in a closed tubular frame with a triple stiffened rear fork and a strong suspension fork with shock and control damper. The large brake drums were provided with cooling fins, the rear brake could be readjusted by hand without tools. This structure gave the vehicle first-class driving characteristics and high reliability for the conditions at the time.

The completely encapsulated cylinder head is noteworthy, an introduction which, even with well-known brands, did not enter series production until 1932. Both bar table motors were built into Degen motorcycles.

Like the Austria-Alpha , the constructions by Franz Bartisch remained prototypes due to the lack of budget and a financier.

Professional background and career

Franz Bartisch's main job was in the Mezo company founded by Hermann Medinger as an expert in engine tuning. There was an engine test bench there, a very rare measuring instrument for motorcycle workshops at the time. In the workshop, the Puch expedition motorcycles for Max Reisch , Herbert Tichy and Josef Böhmer were also equipped according to ideas from Bartisch.

Bartisch later designed Puch tricycles based on the Puch 200 and Puch 125T .
