Franz Dameris

Franz Dameris (born November 14, 1902 in Schmallenberg , † March 7, 1991 in Menden ) was a German philosopher and painter .

Life

Dameris was born in Schmallenberg. He later moved to Menden with his family. There he passed his Abitur in 1922 at the Walram High School. Dameris then studied art history and philosophy at the University of Bonn . In 1935 he obtained his doctorate in philosophy on the French philosopher Nicolas Malebranche . He then moved to Paderborn to study theology .

He also trained as a painter during his studies. At the end of the 1940s he gave his brother's family, who lived in Münster-Mecklenbeck , an oil painting about 90 centimeters wide and 137 centimeters high, which shows a portrait of Mary with a baby Jesus holding an apple. This picture was only rediscovered in December 2012 in the attic of the courtyard. In the following years, various churches in the Ruhr area and Magdeburg area as well as in the Menden area were artistically designed by him with choir paintings, crossroads, triptychs and panel paintings. The nature lover also created landscapes and nature pictures.

He was also active in local politics and was the founder of the Menden Forest Protection Association.

Franz Dameris died in Menden in 1991.

  • In 1977 Dameris was awarded the Environmental Protection Medal.
