Franz Engel (natural scientist)

Franz Engel (born July 21, 1834 in Röbel / Müritz ; † August 30, 1920 in Neubrandenburg ; full name: Theodor Franz Johann August Engel ) was a German explorer . Its official botanical author's abbreviation is " Engel ".

Live and act

Franz Engel was born as the son and one of nine children of the lawyer and Mayor of Röbel Christian Engel and his wife Ulrike Classe (1793–1881). He studied natural sciences in Berlin and Leipzig . From 1857 he traveled to Venezuela and New Granada , then took over the management of a plantation in Zulia and later the administration of a large estate in the mountainous region of Mérida .

1863 returned angel back to Europe, then made in 1870 as a volunteer to the German-French war with and kicked peace agreement as a scientific assistant in the administration of the Museum of the Agricultural University of Berlin , the librarian , he was.

On his travels in South America, Engel found a type of palm that he named after his hometown Röbel: Robelia Solitaria Engel .
