Franz Theodor Fürsich (born July 23, 1947 in Eichstätt ) is a German paleontologist , known for research on paleoecology .

Fürsich studied at the University of Tübingen with a diploma in 1971 and a doctorate in 1974. He also received a master's degree from the University of Oxford in 1973 . From 1976 he researched and taught at the Ludwig Maximilians University in Munich and in 1987/88 he was a professor in Bremen. Since 1988 he has been a professor at the University of Würzburg and director of the Paleontological Institute. From 2007 he was Professor of Paleontology at the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nürnberg . In 2012 he retired.

Fürsich deals with paleoecology, trace fossils, facies analysis, taxonomy of mussels (especially from the Jurassic), taphonomy and stratigraphy. At first he also dealt with brachiopods from the Paleozoic Era . He reconstructs fossil ecosystems with strict quantitative methods (using statistics and isotope analysis) and worked out the importance of biostratonomy for the correct interpretation of the finds. He conducted research around the world (for example in China, Iran and India) and the ecosystems he studied include, above all, global shelf deposits from Jurassic and Chalk (such as lithographic limestone from the Upper Jurassic, e.g. Solnhofen limestone ) and, more recently, deposits in lakes the early Cretaceous in China. In 1977 he introduced the modern term St. Cassian formation with J. Wendt .

He was a visiting professor in Paris, Tokyo, Jaipur, Montevideo, Boulder in Colorado, Copenhagen and Oxford, among others.

In 2008 he received the Lamarck Medal of the European Geosciences Union . 1979 to 1983 he was a Heisenberg fellow and 1985/86 as a Lynen fellow at the University of Arizona in Tucson. From 1999 to 2001 he was President of the European Paleontological Association .

1986 to 1998 he was editor of the paleontological journal . Since 1989 he has been editor of Beringeria.

In 1975 he married Valsamma Kakkanattu.
