Franz Frimmel
Franz Frimmel , also: Franz Frimmel von Traisenau or František Frimmel von Traisenau , (born April 6, 1888 in Vienna , † November 19, 1957 in Olomouc ) was an Austro-Czech botanist . He was a pioneer in European plant breeding .
Life
Franz Frimmel studied botany at the University of Vienna . During his studies he was close friends with the physicist Erwin Schrödinger .
Frimmel became a full professor and full professor for agriculture at the German Technical University in Brno .
In 1918 Franz Frimmel became head of the Mendel Institute for Genetics and Plant Breeding in Eisgrub, which was founded in 1912, succeeding the Viennese professor Erich Tschermak-Seysenegg . He was also a professor of agricultural botany at the Mendel University for Agriculture and Forestry Brno (MUAF), founded in 1919 . Frimmel was a pioneer in plant breeding and became internationally known for his research on the cultivation of fruit plants, especially tomatoes. In 1939 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .
Frimmel stayed in Czechoslovakia, where he headed a tobacco research institute in Olomouc until his death in 1957.
His herbarium was incorporated into the herbarium of today's Institute of Botany and Zoology at Masaryk University in Brno (BRNU).
