Franz Josef Röll

Franz Josef Röll (* 1949 ) is a German sociologist and professor emeritus for new media and media education at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences .

Live and act

After completing a commercial apprenticeship, Röll worked as an accountant for a tax consultancy. He was admitted to the course on the second educational path. He then obtained his diploma in sociology as well as extracurricular pedagogy and adult education at the Goethe University in Frankfurt. Röll has volunteered in the youth association area for several years. He worked for three years as a youth education advisor at the DLRG-Jugend Hessen, and for 16 years as an education advisor at the Institute for Media Education and Communication in Frankfurt.

In 1984 Röll accompanied the founding of today's Society for Media Education and Communication Culture (GMK). He completed his doctorate at Bielefeld University, supervised by Dieter Baacke , on the subject of myths and symbols in popular media. From September 1, 1999, he filled a professorship at the University of Darmstadt in the Faculty of Social Sciences and Social Work with a focus on new media and media education. At the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, he took over the chairmanship of the economic committee (2000) and later that of the alumni committee (2009). He was also a member of the budget committee (2000) and the IT steering committee (2010). Outside of his activities at the Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences, he took over for the magazine “merz. media + education “activities as reviewers.

In his further professional years, Röll dealt intensively with the effect of communication technologies and media on thinking, perceiving and acting and found transfers to action-oriented models in the field of youth work. He pays special attention to the new media's opportunities for learning to learn. An important area of ​​activity for Röll is dealing with learner types . For this he took on the scientific advice for the development of learning style tests and a learning advice within the project "Lerno - the learning guide on the Internet". In addition, he is concerned with the possibilities of consciously decoding subtexts that can be unconsciously distributed via popular media.

In addition to his professional activity, Röll organizes study trips every year. He traveled to countries such as Myanmar , Nepal , the People's Republic of China , Australia , East Africa, Georgia , Armenia and Malta . In doing so, he often goes on routes away from the well-known tourist centers. He processes his impressions together with Hildegard Wolf in artistic multivision shows . For the audiovisual productions he receives invitations to international multivision festivals, etc. a. to Graz ( Austria ), Hanover , Munich , Nuremberg , Rieti ( Italy ).
