He studied theology and oriental languages in Münster and became a pastor in Berkum (1833–1839). Then he was appointed professor of the Old Testament at the Catholic Faculty in Wroclaw .

He prepared a multi-volume work on the Phoenicians (1841-1856) and edited Phoenician texts (1845-1847). Among his other works, two biblical studies deserve special mention: The Critical Studies on the Old Testament Chronicle (1834) and an essay in Latin on two reviews of the Jeremiah text. In 1853 Movers was elected to the Bavarian Royal Academy as a member. Movers was repeatedly criticized for his interpretation by the Leipzig Egyptologist Gustav Seyffarth , but Movers was able to prove that Seyffarth did not know his sources or could not interpret them correctly. Movers was highly valued by the historian Theodor Mommsen , among others .

Appreciation

Mommsen valued the orientalist Franz Movers, author of the famous work on the Phoenics, higher than many of his colleagues who were closer to him: that Movers was a theologian and also a Catholic, a member of the Catholic theological faculty, apparently did not bother him; As always, the decisive factors for him were the special characteristics of the man Mover, but if I like to see him , he wrote to Ferdinand Hitzig on December 1, 1855 , who was particularly interested for professional reasons. And when Movers died prematurely, he reported it to him immediately, in great sadness (September 28, 1856): Movers died this morning and I don't want you to find out about the death of the excellent man in the newspapers ... We're losing on for him not only the most learned, but also the most upright and free-spirited of our theologians.
