Ferdinand Hitzig

Ferdinand Hitzig (born June 23, 1807 in Hauingen , † January 22, 1875 in Heidelberg ) was a German Protestant theologian.

Life

The son of pastor Friedrich Wilhelm Hitzig attended education in Lörrach and the grammar school in Karlsruhe as a student of prelate Johann Peter Hebel , who was a lifelong friend of his father.

He studied theology from 1824 at the University of Heidelberg , from 1825 to 1827 at the Friedrichs University in Halle . There his teacher Wilhelm Gesenius had a great influence on his further theological development. After his theological exam in 1827, he went to the University of Göttingen to devote himself to scientific theology, where he joined the theologian Heinrich Georg August Ewald .

In 1829 Hitzig became a private lecturer in the Old Testament in Heidelberg, and in 1833 professor of theology at the University of Zurich , where he was rector from 1842–1844 and 1858–1860 . In 1861 he received an offer to succeed Friedrich Wilhelm Carl Umbreit at the University of Heidelberg. His successor in Zurich was initially Eberhard Schrader (1862–1870), then Heinrich Steiner (1871–1889).

In 1863, Hitzig co-founded the " German Protestant Association ".
