Otto Thenius

Otto Thenius (born June 9, 1801 in Dresden ; † August 13, 1876 ) was a German Evangelical Lutheran theologian, exegete and consistorial councilor who became known for several works on the Old Testament that were important for exegetical science in the 19th century.

Live and act

He was born as the son of the town clerk and actuary at the Dresden City Court Benjamin Heinrich Thenius. From 1816 to 1820 Thenius attended the Princely School of St. Afra in Meißen . He then studied theology at the University of Leipzig , where he was a student of Johann Georg Benedict Winer. In Leipzig theological Historical Society in Leipzig joined in and received his doctorate in 1823 for Dr. phil. In 1824 Otto Thenius became pastor in Skassa near Großenhain and thus a successor to the Land and Border Commissioner Adam Friedrich Zürner, who had been pastor there .

In 1826 Thenius moved to the city hospital in Dresden as a pastor. In 1832 he became a deacon for the Dresden Kreuz- and Frauenkirche. Just one year later he moved to the Dreikönigskirche in Dresden- Innere Neustadt as a deacon and garrison preacher . There he worked until he was 50, when he was appointed pastor. In 1870 he retired at the age of 69. During his term of office, the church tower was added to the Dreikönigskirche from 1854 to 1859.

Otto Thenius was one of the co-founders of the Gustav Adolf Foundation in Dresden, which was founded in 1833 .
