Franz Kels

Franz Kels , also Franz Peter Kels , baptismal name Franciscus Laurentius Hubertus Keltz (born December 25, 1828 in Düsseldorf , † April 20, 1893 ibid), was a German portrait and genre painter from the Düsseldorf School .

Life

Kels, born in Düsseldorf- Derendorf as the only child of Franz Ferdinand Kels (* 1800) and Franziska Sybilla Gertrud Korff (* 1803), attended the Düsseldorf Art Academy from 1844 to 1855 , initially in the construction and plaster classes, and from 1847 in Karl's class Ferdinand son , who trained him to be a portrait painter. From 1850 he turned to genre painting. From 1851 he was a student of Wilhelm von Schadow , from 1854 his master class . In the summer of 1848 Kels was one of the founding members of the Malkasten artists' association , of which he remained until 1883. Kels lived as a freelance painter in Düsseldorf. He became known for his late romantic inspired genre representations from Rhenish-Westphalian folk life. His main works include The Painter in Village (1855), Westphalian Peasant Wedding (1856) and Excursion of the Artists (1864) .
