Franz Oesch

Franz Oesch (born November 14, 1938 in Zurich ) is a Swiss toxicologist and pharmacologist .

From 1961 Oesch studied biology and chemistry at the University of Friborg (Switzerland) , where he received his doctorate in 1969 ( The low molecular weight carbohydrates and polyols in the cambial sap of beech and some other deciduous trees ) and then was an assistant at the Institute for Phytobiochemistry and Plant Physiology. He spent three years at the National Institutes of Health and three years at the Biozentrum of the University of Basel . In 1974 he became professor of toxicology and pharmacology at Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz , where he was head of the molecular pharmacology department at the Pharmacological Institute.

Oesch researched the isolation and characterization of the enzymes that play a role in the activation of various carcinogens in the metabolism.

In 1982 he received the Robert Koch Prize , in 1977 the Cloëtta Prize and in 1990 the German Cancer Prize . In 1992 he was accepted as a full member of the Academia Europaea . He has been a member of the Leopoldina since 1999 .
