Life
Franz Rieger was born on January 23, 1923 as the son of a teacher in Riedau. He attended the Petrinum boys' boarding school in Linz . In 1938, with the annexation of Austria to the German Reich , he came to Passau to the humanistic high school and worked in the financial service.
In 1941 he was drafted into the Reich Labor Service and in 1942 at the front. In 1944 he became an American prisoner of war. When he was released from captivity in 1946 and returned to Austria, he worked as a tax officer again.
In 1951 he married and had two sons. From 1955 until his retirement in 1983 he was a librarian in the libraries of the city of Linz.
Rieger lived withdrawn; when asked about it, he quoted Hermann Hesse : " Strange to wander in the fog, life is loneliness, nobody knows the other, everyone is alone ... "
Prof. Franz Rieger died on June 11, 2005 in Oftering after a long illness.
