Franz Schäfer (lawyer)

Franz Schäfer (* 1879 in Fredeburg (near Schmallenberg ), †  April 28, 1958 in Saarbrücken ) was a German lawyer .

Life

The son of a farmer and shoemaker was born in Fredeburg in the Sauerland. Franz Schäfer first attended elementary school and the rectorate school in Fredeburg. He then moved to the Marianum high school in Warburg. In the meantime, his father died in 1898. After studying law in Munich , Freiburg im Breisgau, Berlin and Marburg, he passed the first state examination in Kassel in 1902 and the second state examination in Berlin in 1907. Schäfer received his doctorate in law in Freiburg.

At the Saarbrücken regional court he was a regional judge from 1909, regional court director from 1922 and president from 1927 to 1937. On August 1, 1937, Schäfer, who belonged to the National Socialist Lawyers' Association and the National Socialist People's Welfare , was appointed Reich judge. He worked as a judge at the Imperial Court until the end of the war.

In the French-occupied Saarland, Schäfer worked in the judicial department of the regional council after the war. There he rose to the position of presidential director. In October 1946 he became a judge at the new higher regional court in Saarbrücken . Two years later, at the age of 68, he retired. As an associate professor for civil law, he then taught at the newly founded University of Saarland until 1952 .
