Franz Scheiner
Franz Scheiner (born April 13, 1847 in Heidingsfeld , today a district of Würzburg, † June 1, 1917 in Würzburg ) was the first major publisher for postcards in Germany and a lithographer . He is known to many postcard collectors mainly because of his early postcards .
The young years
Franz Scheiner was born as the 13th child of the lithographer JB Scheiner. After attending elementary school and Latin school, he learned lithography in his parents' company . From 1862 to 1865 he received artistic training at the then Würzburg art school under Professor Palzig, and from 1867 to 1868 he attended the Ecole des beaux arts in Paris . Between 1866 and 1868 he was also active as a lithographic draftsman in Mainz , Frankfurt am Main , Weißenburg and Paris.
History of the company
In 1825 his father, Johann Baptist Scheiner, got a license for a lithographic institute in Würzburg. When he died in 1854, his wife and his eldest son, Carl Scheiner, who was still a minor, ran the business. Carl Scheiner expanded the existing paper business into a wholesaler in 1866 and in 1869 his brother Paul Scheiner started a book printing company . One year later, Franz Scheiner joined the Scheiner brothers company . The company was wound up six years later, in 1876, but the lithography business remained as a core business. In the same year, a house was bought on Kaiserstrasse, in which a shop was set up. In 1890 they were given the title of Royal Bavarian Court Supplier due to the previous opening of a military forms publishing house , with which they were entitled to bear the royal coat of arms and to supply the royal family. From 1895 to 1896 another building was built on Haugerkirchplatz in Würzburg. In 1900, on the company's 75th anniversary, the company had 100 employees.
The early postcards
Scheiner printed his early cards from 1883 to around 1892. They are probably the best-known copies from the pioneering days of postcards in Germany. They are rare collectibles from a time when there were hardly any such cards. They were pen lithographs in shades of brown that were printed on slightly brownish cardboard. There were maps of 81 different places in Germany, Austria, Italy and what is now France. If they are in good condition, they will have a three-digit value of around 100 to 350 euros. Cards from the Lake Constance area (Lindau and Bregenz) sometimes even have a four-digit value (up to 3000 euros). The first dated card is dated July 7, 1883.
other activities
Scheiner also had the title of Commerzienrat . Franz Scheiner was a member of 10 clubs, where he chaired 6. He was also active in local politics. He was also a participant in the Franco-German War (1870/71).
