Franz Schuster (resistance fighter)

Franz Schuster (born July 18, 1904 in Vienna ; † September 23, 1943 in Buchenwald concentration camp ) was an Austrian social democrat , communist , resistance fighter against National Socialism and a member of the International Camp Committee .

Life

After completing his school career, Schuster worked as an electrical engineer at the electrical works. Politically, he was initially active in the Social Democratic Labor Party (SDAP) and became a member of the Republican Protection Association . Schuster joined the Communist Party of Austria (KPÖ) in 1934 and became a member of the Red Aid . Later he was a member of the Central Committee of the KPÖ.

Schuster was already fighting against the emerging Austrofascism in the parliamentary republic and took an active part in the February fights in 1934. For this he had to serve prison sentences in 1934 and 1936 and was imprisoned in the Wöllersdorf detention center. Due to his political activities, Schuster temporarily lost his job.

After the " Anschluss of Austria " to the German Reich , he was arrested at the beginning of September 1939 and sent to the Buchenwald concentration camp , where he was given prisoner number 3578. He participated in the prisoner resistance and became the Austrian representative in the International Camp Committee (ILK). The circumstances of his death in 1943 are not clear.

Commemoration

A memorial plaque for shoemakers is now in the Vienna House of the KPÖ (1948), a memorial stone is in the urn grove of the Vienna crematorium (1953), and in Vienna the residential complex Hagenmüllergasse 14-16 has been named after him since 1947.
