biography

Franz Sigrist was born in Breisach am Rhein, in what was then Austria. At the age of 17 he came to Vienna and studied at the Vienna Academy with Paul Troger and other painters such as Jacob von Schuppen . In the annual competition of the painting class he won the second highest number of votes of the college in 1752, which was connected with the imperial permission "to work on his own account". Sigrist developed into a master of Rococo painting. His works were stylistically close to Franz Anton Maulbertsch and Josef Ignaz Mildorfer . After completing his studies, he lived in Augsburg from 1754 to 1762 , where he acted as court painter to the bishop. As early as 1754 he became a member of the newly founded Academy of Sciences and Arts Augsburg and in 1755 he was appointed professor of painting. In 1758, during his time in Augsburg, Abbot Benedikt Mauz entrusted him with the creation of three remarkable ceiling frescoes on the theme of "The Marian Protection" in the vestibule of the newly built minster in Zwiefalten . In 1763 Sigrist returned with his family to Vienna, where the new director of the Academy of Fine Arts, the court painter Martin van Meytens , whose acquaintance he had already made in Augsburg, received him for a major commission from the imperial court - the creation of five ceremonial pictures of the Archduke's coronation Josephs in Frankfurt am Main, who later became Emperor Josef II . Sigrist is best known for his religiously inspired prints (Hertel prints) and paintings. Sigrist's monumental ceiling fresco in the ballroom of the University of Eger should be mentioned as the creator of later frescoes . The latter represents the "four faculties" and belongs to the first period of "classicism" (1781).
