Franz Stoedtner
Franz Stoedtner (born March 17, 1870 in Berlin ; † January 14, 1946 there ) was a German photographer and art historian.
Life
Franz Stoedtner studied art history at the Berlin Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität under Herman Grimm , where he wrote a monograph on Hans Holbein the Elder. Ä. received his doctorate. Stoedtner published this in 1896, illustrated with his own reproductions. In 1895 he founded the Institute for Scientific Projection Dr. Franz Stoedtner , with the aim of offering photographic recordings as image material for lectures and publications.
Stoedtner was one of the most important pioneers of documentary photography, especially in the field of art history, but also in other areas. His picture publisher was the model for the photo archive Photo Marburg founded by Richard Hamann in 1913 . After 1949, Stoedtner's widow Ottilie ran the company in Düsseldorf as the photo publisher Dr. Franz Stoedtner left . In 1959 the authorized signatory Heinz Klemm (1920–2001) took over the company. In 1977 the Photo Marburg Photo Archive acquired 200,000 glass negatives and numerous sample albums from the former Stoedtner Archive.
