Franz Theodor Aerni (born October 19, 1853 in Aarburg ; † August 20, 1918 there ) was a Swiss painter .

biography

After the death of his father in 1857, Franz Theodor Aerni went with his mother and three siblings to Heiden AR , then to Winterthur .

He studied with Johann Joseph Geisser (1824-1894) in Lausanne from 1870 to 1871 and went to Italy in 1872 , where he was a student of Adeodato Malatesta (1806-1891) at the local art academy in Modena from 1872 to 1874 . Then he went to Rome, joined the German artist colony, studied from 1874 with Salomon Corrodi at the Accademia di San Luca and helped the master in his studio. In 1878 and 1879 he accompanied his son Hermann Corrodi on a study trip to Egypt and Cyprus and brought back numerous studies from there. Back in Rome, he made friends with August Weckesser and also came into contact with Frank Buchser and Karl Stauffer-Bern . After the outbreak of the First World War , he returned to Switzerland.
