Franz Valentin Zillner

Franz Valentin Zillner (born February 14, 1816 in Salzburg ; † December 17, 1896 there ) was an Austrian doctor , historian and ethnographer .

Zillner studied medicine in Vienna , came to the St. Johanns Hospital in Salzburg as a doctor in 1844 and later worked in the state insane asylum (today's Christian Doppler Clinic ). He was regarded as the main representative of the ethnography of the 19th century in Salzburg, contributed significantly to the intellectual and material development of the town in, gave medical publications out and served as council also politically active.

However, he was also interested in the history of the State of Salzburg . In addition to the monographs Brief Landesgeschichte von Salzburg (1896) and Salzburg Cultural History in Outlines (1871), the history of the city of Salzburg (1885–1890) is one of his lasting achievements. Since 1856 he has met honorable personalities of the state capital for a historical exchange, which in 1860 led to the establishment of the Society for Salzburg Regional Studies . He served in all important positions of this organization, was made an honorary member and published 45 of his historical works in the communications of the Society for Salzburg Regional Studies .

In 1857 he became a member of the Leopoldina .
