Franz Vonessen (born March 8, 1923 in Cologne ; † January 19, 2011 in Oberried ) was a German philosopher and professor at the Albert Ludwig University of Freiburg .

Life

In 1952 Vonessen was awarded the dissertation “The unique being. On the question of being paradoxes in Martin Heidegger " at the Albert-Ludwigs-University Freiburg doctorate . There he completed his habilitation in 1956. He became an adjunct professor in 1965. Franz Vonessen and Friedrich Georg Jünger were among the founders of the magazine “ Scheidewege - Quarterly Journal for Skeptical Thinking ” in 1971 . This developed into a "forum for conservative, technology-critical, ecological and progress-skeptical thinking". He was also appointed professor at the University of Freiburg in 1979.

Franz Vonessen was married to the German writer and editor Renate Vonessen (* 1940). With her "he undertook philosophically founded excursions into the world of fairy tales and into literature in general".

Teaching

Franz Vonessen radically questioned the beliefs of secularized modernity. Metaphysics did not replace or even overcome myth, but rather it emerged from it thanks to an unfathomable close relationship. It should be assumed that every statement about the gods - and such a statement is myth - can only have the meaning of telling the truth. It is by no means necessary to take off a mythical dress from Revelation in order to present a wholesome “naked truth” to modern man. The myth of the Bible and the Greeks is the revelation itself. It is not we have to clear up the myth, the myth clears up us about ourselves. The decline of philosophy manifests itself in the fact that we have become blind to the images of myth and deaf to the language of the first metaphysics. The achievement-oriented thinking that is solely oriented towards success is a "fatal joke". The real achievement consists in rest. “So what performance has its purpose in itself? Just the serious game of thoughts. Theoria, as Aristotle describes it, is valuable in itself, is a successful achievement ... "

"That truth, according to Heraclitus, hides itself through its unbelievability, was a basic axiom in Vonessen's thinking."
