Franz Wähner
Franz Wähner (born March 23, 1856 in Goldenhöhe , Bohemia , † April 4, 1932 in Prague ) was an Austrian geologist and paleontologist.
life and work
Franz Wähner studied geology at the University of Vienna and was an assistant at the University's Geological Institute from 1882 to 1885. Then he was at the Natural History Court Museum in Vienna, most recently as curator. In 1885 he completed his habilitation in Vienna. In 1901 he became professor of geology and mineralogy at the German Technical University in Prague and in 1910, as the successor to Gustav Karl Laube, full professor of geology and paleontology at the German University in Prague ( Karl Ferdinand University ), of which he was rector in 1920/21 . In 1926 he retired.
His main focus was the northern limestone Alps. He wrote a monograph on the ammonites of the lower Lias of the Eastern Alps. From 1903 his monograph on the geology of the Sonnwendgebirge in North Tyrol appeared, which he furnished with his own photographs and which also demonstrated extensive thrusts in the Eastern Alps. He also dealt with the Paleozoic around Prague and the tectonics and longitudinal faults in the Central Bohemian Fold Mountains. He was a close observer, but also very self-critical, which meant that his main works remained unfinished.
He toured Persia and reported on the Zagreb (Agram) earthquake of 1880.
In 1899 he was elected a member of the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .
Wähner died in Prague in 1932. In 1959 he was buried in the family grave at the Vienna Central Cemetery (Gate 2, Group 17B, Row G1, No. 2). The right to use the grave was valid until October 31, 2015.
