Franz Weiling (born September 20, 1909 in Dülmen ; † June 27, 1999 in Bonn ) was a German biologist and professor at the Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn .

Life

After graduating from high school in natural sciences (1928) with a focus on mathematics, physics and biology, he studied philosophy and theology in Brazil from 1929 . He completed the subsequent study of botany, zoology, physics and mathematics at the University of Münster in 1940 with a dissertation.

When he was doing military service as a medic in Lapland from 1941 to 1945 , he familiarized himself with the sub-arctic flora , the study of which he also devoted himself to studying at a Finnish research center between 1978 and 1985. From 1945 to 1947 he worked as an assistant at the Botanical Institute of the University of Münster , and in 1949 he completed his habilitation at the Institute for Agricultural Botany at the University of Bonn . First as a private lecturer and from 1957 as an adjunct professor, he held lectures in botany and from 1963 worked as a scientific adviser and professor. He worked on the research fields of hybridizations in pumpkin species , in vitro culture and genetic engineering . As early as 1959, he succeeded in using artificial embryo cultures to obtain fertile offspring from species that had previously not been crossed with one another.

A research commissioned on the impact of different cultivation methods on the quantitative and qualitative yield characteristics of Kulturrebe developed into an extensive and for the wine-growing successful testing and research. As one of the leading biometricians , Franz Weiling showed new ways to experiment in viticulture and cellar management and offered special lectures and seminars. The main areas of work were cloning and cultivar research, the quality-quantity relationship, and wine sensory issues. In order to make the experimentation more economical, he began to develop computer-controlled statistics programs. This made it possible to include several vine and wine characteristics as well as effective causes (crop treatments, years, locations) in the calculation analyzes.

Franz Weiling was particularly interested in researching the life and work of Johann Gregor Mendel (1822–1884). Before the end of his life, he added six important essays on "Gregor Mendel as a person and researcher" to his almost 300 publications in over 50 scientific journals at home and abroad and was therefore considered the most important German-speaking Mendel expert. He could u. a. give new insights into Mendel's research methodology and reject the accusations of Mendel's scientific dishonesty raised by various critics.

In 1987 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the St. Thomas University of the American Augustinians in Villanova (USA) for his services to research into the personality and work of Gregor Mendel . In 1992 he received the Golden Mendel Medal for Services in the Biological Sciences of the Czechoslovak Academy of Sciences in Prague .

Franz Weiling was married to Elisabeth Jungewelter, who had two daughters and two sons. He died on June 27, 1999 in Bonn.
