Franz Karl Michael Wessel (born March 6, 1903 in Stüblau near Danzig ; † September 11, 1958 ) was a German lawyer and judge of the Federal Constitutional Court .

Life

The son of a landowner visited the Royal Wilhelms-Gymnasium in Königsberg and studied at the universities after graduating from high school Königsberg , Heidelberg and Kiel jurisprudence . In Kiel he also heard lectures by Gustav Radbruch . In 1925 and 1929 he passed his state law exams.

He began his professional career in 1929 as a court assessor in Königsberg. Then it ended up in the labor court. From April 1931 he was a local court advisor and officiated as chairman of the labor court in Königsberg, in October 1932 he was promoted to regional court advisor and took over the chairmanship of the regional labor court in Königsberg. After the seizure of power in 1933 he was only employed as an assessor in a civil chamber due to the law to restore the professional civil service.

In 1938 he was initially appointed to the government council in the Reich Ministry of Transport , but was soon transferred back to the office of the authorized representative for local transport in Berlin . From 1940 he worked as a senior government councilor in the Road Traffic Department in Krakow , and from May 1944 he was employed there as government director.

After the end of the Second World War he was interned from July to December 1945. Then he continued his activity in the transport sector. From March 1946 he first worked as a legal advisor at the Bielefeld Road Traffic Directorate, then from 1948 at the Administration for Transport of the United Economic Area in Frankfurt am Main and finally from 1949 in the Federal Ministry of Transport . In March 1950 he was appointed Secretary of the Legal Committee of the Federal Council .

In 1951 he was elected judge at the Federal Court of Justice . However, he never held this office because he was also elected judge at the Federal Constitutional Court on the proposal of the SPD , of which he was a member . Both certificates of appointment were presented to him together, although the date of issue of the certificate of appointment as federal judge was earlier. From September 1951 Wessel was a member of the 1st Senate for the first occupation of the Federal Constitutional Court.

Wessel died unexpectedly after an operation on September 11, 1958 at the age of 55. He was married to Elisabeth, née Buch.
