Franz Xaver Gegenbauer

Franz Xaver Gegenbauer (born July 8, 1764 in Kirchberg am Wagram , † September 23, 1827 in Fels am Wagram ) was an Austrian teacher and composer .

Life

Born in Kirchberg am Wagram as the son of the school teacher and rain choir Ignatz Leopold Gegenbauer , he received an excellent musical education. At first he was under the direction of the cathedral music director Leopold Hoffmann the choir boy in St. Stephen's Cathedral in Vienna , where his grandfather Johann Adam Gegenbauer worked as sub-cantor and copyist; at the age of ten he became a band singer in the Schottenstift and received violin lessons from Thaddäus Huber . After his voice broke, he was instructed in figured bass and organ by Josef Starzer . In 1782 he worked as a school assistant in Melk with his brother-in-law, the school teacher and monastery organist Franz Schneider . In 1785 Gegenbauer passed the teacher examination at the age of 21 in Korneuburg and in 1786 received the position of school teacher in Fels am Wagram, where he remained until the end of his life.

From 1791 he was married to Anna Bichler.

Works

His work comprises 14 masses, two requiums and several smaller church compositions.
