Josef Starzer

Josef Johann Michael Starzer (baptized January 5, 1726 in Vienna ; † April 22, 1787 ibid) was an Austrian composer and violinist of the pre-classical period .

Life

There is no reliable information about Josef Starzer's educational path, possibly he was like his sister, the singer Katharina Starzer (1752–1775), a student of Giuseppe Bonno and the violinist Giuseppe Trani . In the period from 1752 to 1775 he was recorded as a violinist in the orchestra of the Vienna Burgtheater . As an established composer of ballet music, he followed the Viennese choreographer Anton Christoph Hilverding (1710–1768) to St. Petersburg in 1759 , where he found a job as concertmaster and court composer. Finally he returned to Vienna in 1768 and wrote more ballet music. Among the most successful of this period were “ Roger et Bradamante ” (1771), “ Adèle de Ponthieu ” (1773) and “ Gli Orazi e gli Curiazi ” (1774). In addition to his contemporaries Georg Christoph Wagenseil and Matthias Georg Monn , Starzer was one of the pioneers of Viennese classicism .

In 1771 Starzer was one of the founding members of the "Wiener Tonkünstler Sozietät".

Much of Starzer's music was performed at the concerts of the Vienna Society. In addition to around 250 ballet music and singspiels, including Die Drei Pächter , the oratorio La passione di Gesù Cristo , 12 symphonies, several concerts, including a violin concerto in F major, divertimenti, around 20 string quartets, trios and other chamber music for string and wind instruments .
