occupation

Path of the warrior (Original title: Redbad ) is an epic adventure film by Roel Reiné , which was released in cinemas in the Netherlands on June 28, 2018. The historical epic is about Christianization and the old legends about Radbod , the king of the Frisians , who ruled over the Greater Frisian Empire , which was still completely independent at the time, from the 7th to the 8th century . In the film, Radbod enters into battle with the Franks after they conquered the most important Frisian city and defeated the Frisian King Aldgisl .

action

The Frisian Empire in Radbod's time

Around the year 700 Northern Europe was divided into two worlds. On the one hand the ancient Frisians , the Saxons and the Danes, on the other hand the Franks, who want to achieve what even the Romans failed to achieve: to rule all of Europe. Your new weapon to subdue the Gentiles is Christianity. The most important trading center in Europe in Dorestad is ruled by the Frisian King Aldgisl. His son Radbod doesn't think much of the pagan rituals of his people. He gets into an argument with his father when his girlfriend Fenne is destined to be sacrificed to the gods.

During the sacrificial ritual, the Franks attack Dorestad. The Frisians lose the city and flee to Wijnaldum. Radbod's uncle Eibert seizes power. He blames Radbod not only for the defeat, but also for the death of his father, the previous king. Tied up on a raft, Radbod is given to the sea to die. However, Radbod survived and ended up in Denmark, where he was gradually accepted by the Vikings . He learns the strength of his own culture, and after fighting side by side with the Vikings against their rival, the Svear , he marries Frea, the daughter of King Wiglek, who gives Radbod a son.

When a traveling merchant or messenger came to his place, he said that the Frisians had now found a way to make a stable peace with the Franks: Sinde, Radbod's sister, is to be married to Karl, a son of the Frankish king Pippin . Radbod immediately sets off by ship with his wife and child to Dorestad, from where they continue with horses to Reims , the Merovingian royal city. During a mass, Radbod sees Bishop Willibrord forcibly convert and humiliate his sister. Radbod swears to free her, but he cannot do it alone. The army of his uncle Eibert and his cousin Jurre, who is now in power, does not seem strong enough to defeat the Franks.

Historical background

Embroidery depicting the legend in which the Frisian King Radbod is ready to be baptized by Wulfram

Radbod (also Redbad ) was a king of the Frisians who ruled from the residences of Utrecht and Dorestad from 679 to 719 . Since the sources about his life and work are poor, many statements about Radbod cannot be conclusively proven and fall within the scope of legend. With the attempt to maintain Friesland's independence vis-à-vis the rival Franconians and the associated vehement resistance to the Franconian missionary and Christianization efforts, Radbod left a lasting impression on the Frisian population. Radbod's domain extended over a wide coastal strip of the North Sea from the Sinkfal River near Bruges to the Weser . The core area of the empire was between today's IJsselmeer and the Ems .

Incidentally, it is not a documentary film that aims to show the current state of research as truthfully as possible along an exciting episode. Both the historical context, as well as the actions of the people, everyday life, fighting style and armament and equipment are largely anachronistic or do not belong in the space in which they are depicted or used (e.g. Bouillon Castle as an anachronism, Franziska as a weapon among the Vikings).

production

Staff and funding

The film was produced by Klaas de Jong . Directed by Roel Reiné . After a few films in the Netherlands, including the award-winning action film The Delivery , for which he was awarded the Golden Calf for best director, Reiné moved to Los Angeles in 2005 and made 14 American films for the big ones here in eight years Studios with many international stars, most recently Iron Fists 2 with RZA, Seal Team Eight with Tom Sizemore, Dead in Tombstone with Mickey Rourke, Scorpion King: Battle for Redemption with Ron Perlman and Billy Zane and the two sequels of Death Race with Sean Bean and Ving Rhames. Alex van Galen wrote the script .

Cast, stunts and costumes

The main role of Radbod was cast with the Dutch actor Gijs Naber , who trained traditional fighting techniques with the stunt legend Seng Kawee in preparation for his role. Huub Stapel took over the role of his father, King Aldgisl . Jonathan Banks plays the role of Pippin , the merciless king of the Franks in Redbad .

Martina Fehmer created the costumes.

Filming and equipment

In September 2017 the film was shot in the viking village of Valsgaard in Wallsbüll

The shootings for the film took place inside and outside the Netherlands. For example, recordings were made in the PreHistorisch Dorp in Eindhoven , but also in the Alde Feanen in the Dutch province of Friesland . In addition, recordings took place in the Belgian Bouillon Castle , in Denmark and in Germany, here from September 21 to 24, 2017 in the Valsgaard Viking village in Wallsbüll . Filming ended on November 19, 2017 after 42 days of shooting. The director himself acted as cameraman.

The scenes in Wallsbüll are not supposed to be fights, but rather the situation how Radbod and his people arrive after they have been defeated by the Franks and gather strength in the village to defend themselves. For the filming in Wallsbüll 60 to 100 extras were required per day. The film team brought 25 horses with them to Wallsbüll.

Maikel Nijnuis was responsible for the equipment. Despite less experience, the young scene designer, who actually works as a director and screenwriter, was able to convince Reiné and the producers of his idea. The production costs amounted to around 7 million euros.

Film music and publication

The music was composed by the Canadian film composer and music producer Trevor Morris , who had previously worked with composers James Newton Howard and Hans Zimmer and was awarded an Emmy for his work on the television series The Tudors and The Borgias .

A first trailer for the film was presented at the beginning of April 2018. At the same time it was announced that the publishing rights to the Chinese Star-D Group, Ozen Film from Turkey, to Cross Median for the Commonwealth of Independent States, to Karpat Media from Romania and Media Squad for Poland, the Czech Republic, the Slovak Republic and Hungary were sold. Splendid Film released the film in Dutch cinemas on June 28, 2018. It is the first Dutch film to be released in 4DX format.
