Franz Xaver von Meixner

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Franz Xaver von Meixner (* 1793 in Zweibrücken ; † after 1830) was a landscape painter of the 19th century with the focus of his work in the area of Munich .

Life

The artist's life data are insufficiently documented. It can be traced back to Saarbrücken between 1809 and 1820 and in Hamburg from 1823 to 1825 . According to the entry in his matriculation register, he came from Zweibrücken and on January 1, 1809, at the age of 16, became a student of the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich , specializing in painting with a focus on landscape painting. His choice of motif clearly reflects his attachment to Munich and its surroundings.

style

Von Meixner stands in the tradition of the first generation of landscape painters at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts , which was founded in 1808 by King Maximilian I of Bavaria . Somewhat better-known representatives of this forerunner generation of the Munich School were z. B. Max Joseph Wagenbauer (1775–1829), Johann Jakob Dorner the Younger (1775–1852) and Simon Warnberger (1769–1847).

Popular motifs are Munich city backdrops and landscapes with mountains and lakes in the surrounding area in warm colors; Tree trunks, grass, leaves of trees and waves of the lakes are executed with the meticulous attention to detail that later generations of Munich academy painters perfected. On the other hand, buildings and mountains often blur with the clouds in the background, as in a Leonardo da Vinci- inspired sfumato .

Typical for this first generation of Munich landscape painters are people and animals in the foreground as accessories, as in genre scenes from Biedermeier ; Franz Xaver von Meixner enlivened his pictures with strollers in traditional costumes, noblemen with parasols and hunting dogs, farmers who transport their crops on a cart, soldiers in contemporary Bavarian uniform (blue skirts with red and gold collars, white trousers, high caps) On foot, on horseback, in conversation or leaning on their rifles.

Franz Xaver von Meixner's portrait painting is also lifelike and expressive thanks to its great attention to detail (facial features, hands).

Only a few oil paintings by Meixner can be found in German museums:

  • Self-portrait in the Historical Museum in Speyer
  • Portrait of the master confectioner Steenfatt in the Hamburger Kunsthalle
  • Soldiers in a landscape in the Lenbachhaus in Munich (dating 18th. Has become illegible)

Some of those Munich cityscapes and Bavarian landscapes (around 1820) that appear on rare occasions in Munich auction houses are still believed to be privately owned. A picture clock dated 1815, a mountain landscape with a large oak in the middle distance, has also changed hands at least twice; the pointer is in a free-standing church tower.

The artist signed with his last name and wrote the date behind it.
