Franz von Assisi Ludwig Prince of Arenberg (born September 29, 1849 at Arenberg Castle in Belgium ; † March 25, 1907 at Pesch Castle ) was a German diplomat and member of the Prussian House of Representatives and the German Reichstag .

Life

He was a member of the noble house of Arenberg and was born the son of Duke Anton Franz von Arenberg (1826–1910) and his wife Countess Marie von Merode . His grandfather was the ruling Duke Prosper Ludwig von Arenberg (1785–1861); Duke Engelbert-August von Arenberg (1824–1875) was his father's brother.

After graduating from high school in Bonn , Franz von Arenberg also attended university there and studied political science and law . In the Franco-Prussian War of 1870/71 he served as a lieutenant in the 1st Rhenish Hussar Regiment No. 7 (Bonn King Hussars) and was awarded the Iron Cross .

Then he was initially a trainee lawyer at the regional court in Metz , where he passed his exam in this regard in 1872. He later entered the diplomatic career, in 1876 he passed the diplomatic exam. He was used as a legation secretary in Stockholm , London , St. Petersburg and Constantinople .

Politically, Arenberg belonged to the Center Party . In 1882 he left the service of the Foreign Office and became a member of the Prussian House of Representatives. Since 1890 he also had a seat in the German Reichstag. He was u. a. Advocate of a moderate colonial policy and is listed in 1895 as one of the "Berlin Vice Presidents" of the German Colonial Society .

He also became known as one of the mediators in the conflict between the imperial colonial administration and the Steyler Mission in the pursuit of the colonial scandal in Atakpame / Togo. The Divine Word missionaries had arranged for disciplinary measures to be taken against some imperial colonial officials who were particularly violent in the colony. This scandal preoccupied the press and the Reichstag several times between 1904 and 1907.

Franz von Arenberg was a devout and committed Catholic, who also belonged to the "Central Committee of the German Catholic Days" , today's Central Committee of German Catholics . The Catholic priest and Eichstätter cathedral capitular Philipp von Arenberg (1848–1906) was his brother.
