Franz von Somnitz (* 1717 ; † 1770 ) was a Prussian legal attorney. He was President of the Tribunal of the Lands Lauenburg and Bütow and probably at the same time chief captain of the Lands Lauenburg and Bütow .

Life

He came from the noble Pomeranian family Somnitz . His father Christoph von Somnitz (* 1683; † 1722) was a district judge of the Lauenburg and Bütow regions and heir to Massow.

Franz von Somnitz attended the Academic Gymnasium Danzig from 1733 and studied law at the University of Königsberg from 1734 . He entered the Prussian judicial service and in 1742 became a Pomeranian councilor.

In 1760 he became president of the tribunal of the Lauenburg and Bütow regions . The Lauenburg and Bütow lands in the east of Pomerania had a special position in Brandenburg-Prussia as fiefdoms of the crown of Poland, including their own tribunal as an appeal instance and their own chief captain. According to today's literature, Somnitz also received the title of captain of the Lauenburg and Bütow regions ; According to older literature, on the other hand, the office of chief captain is said to have remained vacant from 1760 to 1771, so that Somnitz would have been president of the tribunal, but not chief captain. Somnitz remained in office until his death in 1770. Ewald Georg von Natzmer became the new tribunal president ; new captain Heinrich Eggard von Woedtke .

Somnitz was the hereditary lord of Schwartow and Schwartowke in the Land of Lauenburg and owned other goods in the Kingdom of Poland. His son Johann Friedrich von Somnitz left the Prussian civil service after his death and devoted himself to the management of the inherited goods.
