Lorenz Christoph von Somnitz
Lorenz Christoph von Somnitz (born September 30, 1612 in Neustettin in Western Pomerania ; † February 16, 1678 in Nijmegen ) was a Brandenburg official and statesman .
Life
Lorenz Christoph von Somnitz is the best-known descendant of the Somnitz noble family in Eastern Pomerania . His father was Peter II von Somnitz (1576–1646), captain and judge in Neustettin, his mother was Dorothee von Westeregeln. He had attended schools in Kolberg and Thorn and then studied law, among other things, at the Universities of Königsberg , Basel and Wittenberg . After completing his studies, he went on a cavalier tour and gained experience abroad in the Netherlands , Belgium , England , Denmark and France . After his return in 1637 he started a civil service career in Neustettin.
In 1654 he became Real Privy Councilor in Brandenburg . After he and his sons and next cousins were enfeoffed in 1655 by Elector Friedrich Wilhelm with the office of hereditary treasurer of the Duchy of Western Pomerania and the Principality of Cammin , he was appointed Chancellor in 1656.
Somnitz was involved in important diplomatic missions, including the conclusion of the Treaty of Wehlau and the conclusion of the great peace of Oliva on May 3, 1660, which pacified the entire north of Europe. In 1671, in a report prepared jointly with other state councilors, he recommended the Brandenburg elector to accept the Jews expelled from Austria . In 1678 he was also involved in the negotiations for the peace of Nijmegen ; however, he died during this mission in Nijmegen.
He was the heir to Grumsdorf and Dorkow. In 1660 he also became the heir to the important Charbrower estates near Leba . He donated the village church of Charbrow .

Somnitz was married twice. First marriage 1643 to Dorothea von Kleist (1628–1647), daughter of the ducal Pomeranian Privy Councilor, court judge and governor of Greifenberg Matthias von Kleist (1602–1637), and after their death, in their second marriage 1654 with Ida Erdmuthe von Krockow ( 1635–1699), daughter of the Imperial Lieutenant Colonel on Ross and Royal Polish Starost Martin Döring von Krockow († 1649).
