Franciscan monastery Vico

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Franciscan monastery of Vico (French: Couvent de Vico or Couvent Saint-François ) was a Franciscan monastery from 1481 to 1826 and has been a monastery of the Oblates (OMI) in Vico on Corsica since 1835 .

history

The Franciscan Monastery

In 1481 Pope Sixtus IV granted the secular local lord of Vico (50 km north of Ajaccio ) permission to set up a Franciscan monastery (then in the Diocese of Sagone ). In the 17th and 18th centuries, today's buildings were built. When the monastery was officially dissolved by the French Revolution in 1792 , thanks to popular support, the monks were able to survive until the death of the last Franciscan in 1826.

The oblate monastery

The Bishop of Ajaccio , Toussaint Raphaël Casanelli d'Istria (1794–1869), who was born in Vico , bought the property back in 1834 and mediated the repopulation in 1835 through the Oblates of the Immaculate Virgin Mary founded by Eugen von Mazenod . Until his death in 1839, Charles Dominique Albini , who became famous as the apostle of Corsica and whose remains are laid out in a side chapel of the monastery church (consecrated to Mazenod) , stood at its head . His successor until 1847, Étienne Semeria (1813–1868), was later Auxiliary Bishop of Jaffna on Ceylon . Two other bishops emerged from the monastery: Cardinal Joseph Hippolyte Guibert (1802–1886) and Mathieu-Victor Balaïn (1828–1905), Bishop of Nice (1877–1896) and Archbishop of Auch (1896–1905). The founder of the order paid a visit to the monastery in October 1851. From 1903 to 1935 the Oblates were expelled from the Third Republic (against popular opposition) but were able to return. Today the few Oblates living in the area do pastoral service in the area and take in monastery guests. Father Michel Brune has been the superior since 2017.

Equipment of the monastery and monastery church

A polychrome figure of Christ from the 15th century, a huge chasuble cabinet from the 17th century and a bust of Albini by the Corsican sculptor Damaso Maestracci (1888–1976) are part of the furnishings of the monastery, which is situated opposite the village in a magnificent landscape. A landscape fresco is painted on the monastery wall in front of the church, in which Albini is inserted larger than life. An imposing Calvary from the 19th century rises next to it .
