The Franzosenweiher is a lake in the municipality of Spreitenbach in the Swiss canton of Aargau .
location
The lake is located in a nature reserve in the forest between Spreitenbach and Dietikon and can be reached by pedestrians and cyclists within a few minutes via a path that leads south from Weiherstrasse in Spreitenbach to the pond. The nature protection zone consists of the French pond and some smaller ponds in a wetland and the adjacent forest and is characterized by a rich flora and fauna . In the middle of the lake is a densely vegetated island.
Emergence
The earlier larger pond was created by the monks of the Wettingen monastery for trout breeding, which derives the former name Chlosterweiher or Klosterweiher, which can still be found on some maps today.
Naming
In 1799, Napoleon's troops set up camp here before crossing the Limmat at Fahr Monastery . Legend has it that the French emptied the lake to steal the fish.
Old bathroom
The former open-air swimming pool of Spreitenbach, fed by the outflow from the French pond to the south, is also located in the nature reserve. It was built in 1933/34 and used until the 1950s. After a swimming pool was built in Dietikon, the old bath was increasingly forgotten and neglected. Today the old bath is an important biotope within the nature protection zone, which as such is maintained by the community.
