View of the location

The small monument is located about two kilometers northwest of Buchenbühl , a district of the city of Nuremberg . It is there in the community-free area Kraftshofer Forst in the Flur Am Rönig at a forest path crossing of the Heroldsberger Weg .

The heavily weathered stone cross is made of sandstone and has the dimensions 86 × 87 × 23–32 cm. It has recognizable, but no longer clearly legible characters. A photo from 1939 still clearly shows the inscription "1909 Frauenkreuz". The cross has an old, repaired break in the base area. Both cross arms are unusually reinforced on the upper side towards the shaft. The cross could therefore have been broken off and was then put back upside down. Such armrests are usually located below the crossbeams. Today it stands on a stone pedestal in which a bottle with a foundation stone certificate and a few coins is said to be walled in.

The Bavarian State Forests set up an information board on site in 2017 .

history

The cross probably dates from the 15th / 16th centuries. Century and is thus much older than the notched year 1909. The reason for the original list is not known. It was first as White Cross (or White Cross Stone ) at Kirchenweg of Almoshof after Kraftshof near a stony little bridge over the grate ditch. The name at that time is explained by the fact that there was a contained spring at the Rostgraben with the inscription Weißer Kreuzsteinbrunnen ( 49 ° 29 ′ 52.58 ″  N , 11 ° 4 ′ 0.59 ″  E ). Another name for this cross was Peststein, although it had no relation to the plague in the 14th century.

The current name Frauenkreuz dates from 1812/13. In memory of a woman who was frozen to death here and found dead, a plaque with this name was first attached to a tree. Then a cross was carved into the back of the bark of the oak standing next to it . Lightning later destroyed the oak. Subsequently, a sheet of metal together with the image of Mary with the baby Jesus was attached to a pine tree . The board had the inscription "Frauenkreuz". The pine is no longer standing today and the sheet metal is considered to be missing.

1909 is likely the year the cross was erected in its current location. It is not known why it was moved to its current location in 1909. The women's cross has been shown in its current location in maps since 1925.
