The Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS is an institute of the Fraunhofer Society for the Promotion of Applied Research eV The Fraunhofer IKS is based in Munich. It conducts applied research and development in the field of information and communication systems .

history

The Fraunhofer IKS was established in 1999 as Fraunhofer ESK from the System Technology / Telecommunications department of the Fraunhofer Institute for Solid State Technology under the direction of Ingolf Ruge. In 2003, Ruge handed over the management of the institute to his previous deputy Rudi Knorr. In 2006, Knorr was appointed to the chair for communication technology at the Faculty for Applied Computer Science at the University of Augsburg . Until July 1, 2013, Fraunhofer ESK operated as the Fraunhofer Institute for Communication Systems ESK, before it was finally converted into a permanent institute. On December 1, 2019, today's Fraunhofer Institute for Cognitive Systems IKS was established on the basis of the previous Fraunhofer Institute for Embedded Systems and Communication Technology ESK.

Research and Development

The research can be divided into 3 core competencies:

  • Resilient Systems: The focus of research here is on Dependability Awareness and Dependable Self-Adaptiveness. The aim is for a system to continue to function reliably despite expected or unexpected changes.
  • Adaptive Systems : The focus of research is on adaptive, software-intensive and embedded systems . The research goal is a consistent methodology and modeling for adaptive systems that integrate variability, adaptivity and their control mechanisms. For this purpose, distributed, embedded systems are designed, implemented and evaluated as system concepts.
  • Reliable software : The researchers at Fraunhofer IKS deal with methods and tools to ensure software quality . In networked systems, in addition to the functional properties, so-called non-functional properties such as time behavior or reliability must be taken into account. That is why iterative methods are used, which include repeated feedback from simulations and other analyzes.

The competencies are used in the business fields of future mobility and Industry 4.0.

  • Automotive : The research focuses on the aspects of mastering complexity and connectivity. One focus is the development of methods for the self-organization of the control unit network.
  • Industrial Communication : The focus of the research work is on wireless systems and sensor networks . In addition, the research work is dedicated to the new software architectures and development methods.

Cooperations and memberships

The institute director Rudi Knorr is also professor for communication technology at the Faculty of Applied Computer Science at the University of Augsburg . This personal union ensures that the Fraunhofer IKS has extensive access to the results of basic research at the university.

Together with other Fraunhofer institutes, what was then Fraunhofer ESK founded the Embedded Systems Alliance to bring together the research of the Fraunhofer institutes in this area. Rudi Knorr, the director of the Fraunhofer IKS, is the spokesman for the alliance.

Infrastructure and personnel development

There are currently around 70 employees working at Fraunhofer IKS. Around 70% of the employees are scientists and engineers. Approx. 12% work as technical employees, 18% carry out other activities.

Fraunhofer IKS participates in the training of undergraduate, graduate and postgraduate students as well as technicians and laboratory assistants. Career starters are given the opportunity to gain experience in application-oriented research that they can later use in industry.
