The Fraunhofer Information Center for Space and Building (Fraunhofer IRB), based in Stuttgart , is one of the institutes of the Fraunhofer Society . It provides information on the fields of architecture , civil engineering , building planning, building law, building industry, spatial planning, urban planning and housing. The Fraunhofer IRB Verlag, which publishes publications from the areas of building in existing buildings, structural engineering, building renovation, building physics and building research, as well as topics from urban and spatial planning, is affiliated with it . The Fraunhofer IRB also processes individual inquiries about planning and construction and carries out contract research or market studies.

Databases

Databases that Fraunhofer IRB produces, maintains and sells as well as databases hosted by partner institutions include:

  • SCHADIS® - database on structural damage
  • BZP® - building inspectorate approvals and test certificates
  • RSWB®plus - German and English language reference database
  • ICONDA®CIBlibrary - international full-text database
  • ICONDA®Bibliographic - international bibliography database
  • BAUFO® - building research projects in the Federal Republic of Germany since 1957
  • Craft businesses for monument preservation - expert database

Fraunhofer internal services

Only institutes and authors from the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft publish at Fraunhofer Verlag. The publishing program mainly includes research-related publications, studies, conference proceedings and dissertations. Publications and patents that arise in the course of research at Fraunhofer can be found in the bibliographic database Fraunhofer-Publica . It is produced and maintained at the Fraunhofer IRB.

Scientists and authors at Fraunhofer receive support and support in all questions relating to publishing from the Fraunhofer online team. The full-text server Fraunhofer-ePrints provides electronically available publications.

By signing the "Berlin Declaration", the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft committed itself to making published research results freely accessible on the Internet. That is why a publication by Fraunhofer Verlag is placed in the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft's Open Access Repository as a Fraunhofer ePrint parallel to the printed version . The best reception of the research results is achieved through this hybrid publication method.

history

In 1941 the »Construction Information Center« is founded. The initiator was Otto Graf ( Technical University of Stuttgart and Director of the Institute for Building Materials Testing). In 1960 the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft took over responsibility. This is accompanied by a renaming to "Documentation Center for Structural Engineering in the Fraunhofer Society". In 1977 the departments of spatial planning, urban development and housing were added to concentrate the task of knowledge transfer for all areas of planning and construction on one position. As part of the information and documentation program of the Federal Government 1974–1977, the scattered documentation activities of all areas of knowledge were bundled and restructured. In this context, the documentation center of the Institute for Housing and Planning of the German Association for Housing, Urban Development and Spatial Planning in Cologne and the documentation center for structural engineering of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft in Stuttgart became the “Information Network Center RAUM and BAU (IRB) of the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft” in Stuttgart merged. The first bibliographic database ( RSWB ) was set up. From 1980 the databases of the Fraunhofer IRB were offered for online use via the computer of the Fachinformationszentrum Energie, Physik, Mathematik (today Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe ).

In 1982, a building specialist publisher, Fraunhofer IRB Verlag, was founded as a dependent department of the Fraunhofer IRB. The aim is to improve the supply of target groups with printed media such as specialist books and research reports. In 2001 the internet portal was opened to bundle all relevant information from the construction sector at one point. Initially separated into books and databases, www.baufachinformation.de now combines various specialist information on planning and construction that comes from the various databases of the Fraunhofer IRB and numerous external input partners. This means that both free and chargeable information can be found here, including specialist books from all construction publishers, magazines and electronic media.

The Fraunhofer IRB portal makes the IRB databases available for online use, but databases from other providers are also included in the portal. From 2003 onwards, more strategic partnerships will be entered into with important associations and specialist institutions for planning and construction. On the one hand, these facilitate access to the information products and services of the Fraunhofer IRB for the specific target groups and, on the other hand, provide information from their specialist areas and areas of responsibility.

In 2004 a strategic plan was drawn up for the institute with a planning horizon up to 2009. This should document the future orientation of the business areas and core competencies of the institute. Annual revisions bring about a continuous adjustment to internal and external developments. In 2009, after a fundamental revision, a new strategic plan for the years 2009–2014 was drawn up. There is a cooperation with the University of Applied Sciences in Stuttgart, u. a. with the aim of giving construction students access to the specialist media and information skills. Fraunhofer Verlag was founded in 2009 to increase the public's awareness of Fraunhofer research. Books and brochures are published here that are the result of the work of the Fraunhofer Institutes and cooperating institutions. Almost all areas of Fraunhofer are represented here.

Cooperations

Strategic partnerships are entered into with important associations and specialist institutions in planning and construction. On the one hand, these facilitate access to the information products and services of the Fraunhofer IRB for specific target groups and, on the other hand, provide information from their specialist areas and areas of responsibility. Through its membership in the Fraunhofer Building Alliance, the Fraunhofer IRB contributes to the transfer of research results to the specialist public. As part of the “Future Building” research initiative of the Federal Ministry for Transport, Building and Urban Development, the Fraunhofer IRB is always close to current research topics.

Infrastructure

The institute employs around 100 people. It is possible to train at the Fraunhofer IRB as a specialist in media and information services , specializing in information and documentation .
