FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure (until 2009 Fachinformationszentrum (FIZ) Karlsruhe Society for Scientific and Technical Information mbH ) is a non-profit GmbH with the public mandate to provide science and research with cross-disciplinary scientific information and a member of the Leibniz Association .

history

The "Program for the Promotion of Information and Documentation ( IuD Program ) 1974–1977", decided by the Federal Government, had the aim of combining the previously largely uncoordinated activities in the information system in 16 central specialist information systems in order to ensure an efficient information supply.

In 1977 the Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe was founded as a GmbH of the federal and state governments with the scientific focus on energy, physics and mathematics. On June 6, 1977, was partnership agreement signed by the federal government and federal states, on 22 August 1977, the entry was made in the Commercial Register and thus the establishment of the Fachinformationszentrum energy, physics, mathematics GmbH in the legal sense.

When it was founded, five scientific institutions were merged:

  • Central Office for Nuclear Energy Documentation Karlsruhe (ZAED), founded in 1957
  • Central Office for Aerospace Documentation and Information Munich (ZLDI), founded in 1954
  • Editing of Physical Reports Braunschweig (PB), founded in 1845
  • Editor Zentralblatt für Mathematik Berlin (ZfM), founded in 1931
  • Editor Zentralblatt für Didaktik der Mathematik Karlsruhe (ZDM), founded in 1969.

In 1987 the name was changed to Fachinformationszentrum Karlsruhe GmbH . It has had its current name since 2009.

The headquarters are on the north campus of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology - KIT (formerly Research Center Karlsruhe ) in Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen. There are also branch offices in Berlin and Bonn and a subsidiary FIZ Karlsruhe Inc. in Princeton, New Jersey, USA. FIZ Karlsruhe finances around 80% of its activities through income from its activities; federal and state grants cover the remaining financial requirements.

E-Science-Solutions KnowEsis

For applications in the field of e-Science , FIZ Karlsruhe has developed the e-Science Solutions KnowEsis. KnowEsis supports universities, research institutes and interdisciplinary science organizations in knowledge management and collaborative scientific work.

As part of its e-science activities, the company and the Max Planck Society (MPG) are implementing the eSciDoc project funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research with the aim of creating an information, communication and publication platform for research institutions.

Databases and specialist portals in natural sciences, mathematics and computer science

FIZ Karlsruhe produces databases and specialist portals in the fields of energy, physics and mathematics in national and international collaborations .

ENERGY is a bibliographical database of the worldwide literature of energy research and energy technology . It is created in cooperation with 15 other countries as part of international cooperation with the Energy Technology Data Exchange (ETDE) program of the International Energy Agency (IEA) .

International Nuclear Information System (INIS) is created as part of an international cooperation under the coordination of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and contains references from the fields of nuclear research and nuclear technology.

ICSD is a database for inorganic crystal structures . It contains around 100,000 crystal structures that have been published since 1913. Scientists are also given the opportunity to deposit crystal structures in a crystal structure depot at FIZ Karlsruhe.

In cooperation with the European Mathematical Society and the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences , zbMATH (Zentralblatt für Mathematik), a searchable mathematics database, is created and offered as a web service. The mathematics portal zbMATH is the central entry point to all mathematics databases from FIZ Karlsruhe, a web search engine for mathematics and topic pages on applied mathematics, the history and didactics of mathematics.

In the field of computer science, FIZ Karlsruhe has developed the information technology portal io-port.net in cooperation with three German universities , which until now only brings together separately available computer and information technology specialist databases under one surface.

Full text service FIZ AutoDoc

The web-based full-text communication service FIZ AutoDoc delivers articles from specialist journals and patent documents in electronic or printed form via affiliated national and international libraries and publishers .

In connection with the STN database research, FIZ AutoDoc functions as a document delivery service for European customers within the STN Full-Text Solution. However, it is also offered as an independent web portal for ordering full texts, and is used as a literature supply system on the intranets of several companies.

Research service

The research service takes over a. the selection of the relevant databases, formulates the search strategy, carries out the research - e.g. B. for patents , articles in specialist journals or research reports - and sends the research results to the client. An analysis of the documents found can also be commissioned.

Infrastructure tasks for society

FIZ Karlsruhe represents Germany on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) in cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) and the International Energy Agency (IEA) in Paris and participates in global exchange and in the collection of information Energy technologies .

In cooperation with the Stiftung Jugend forscht , FIZ Karlsruhe created the full-text database JufoBase with the work of award-winning Jugend forscht participants. At the end of 2013, the JufoBase database was discontinued. The reason for this decision was the poor coverage of the database, the lack of timeliness and the weak demand.

BINE information service

In the course of the two oil price crises in 1973 and 1979, the German population's interest in alternative energy sources and energy efficiency technologies increased significantly. The then Federal Ministry for Research and Technology was so busy answering the growing number of inquiries from citizens that at the end of 1979 the Bonn office of FIZ Karlsruhe was commissioned to do so. Work began in October 1979. Since the beginning of 1981, this service has operated independently under the name of BINE Information Service (initially: Citizen Information New Energy Technologies, BINE for short, in its own description often BINE Information Service - energy research for practice ), making BINE Information Service one of the first public providers of qualified research information from the energy sector . Over the years, the scope and topics of energy research and thus the task profile and target groups of BINE Information Service expanded. Responsibility for energy research later changed in part to the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology (BMWi), with basic research on energy still being carried out by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF). In the meantime, the BINE Information Service and six editors reported on the results and perspectives of around 500 ongoing research projects in the fields of efficiency technologies and renewable energies . With the public funding, BINE Information Service should offer manufacturer-independent and technology-neutral information.

FIZ Karlsruhe was responsible for editing the BMWi's research portals.

  • BINE-Projektinfos, the four-page series provides information on the latest results from research and demonstration projects. ISSN  0937-8367
  • BINE thematic information summarizes results on 20 pages and documents the current status of key topics in energy research. ISSN  1610-8302
  • basisEnergie explains 20 basic topics from the areas of energy saving and renewable energies. ISSN  1438-3802

The BINE information service was discontinued at the end of 2018, the website will remain online for two years, but will no longer be updated.
