Fred Jüssi

Fred Jüssi (born January 29, 1935 in Aruba ) is an Estonian zoologist, nature photographer and environmental journalist.

Early years

Fred Jüssi was born in what was once the Dutch West Indies . In 1938 the parents moved back to Estonia. In 1953, the son passed the Abitur in Tallinn . Fred Jüssi completed his studies in biology and zoology at the University of Tartu in 1958 . From 1958 to 1960 he was a biology teacher at a school in Emmaste on the island of Hiiumaa . He then worked as a laboratory assistant for experimental biology at the Estonian Academy of Sciences .

From 1962 to 1975 Jüssi worked as a consultant and inspector for nature conservation in the Ministry of Forestry and Nature Conservation of the Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic . From 1976 to 1989 he worked as a freelance worker for the state radio station Eesti Raadio and the nature magazine Eesti Loodus . His program Das ABC der Natur (1879–1986), in which he brought the flora and fauna of Estonia and the world closer to a wide audience, was particularly well-known and popular .

Popularization of environmental issues

Fred Jüssi is one of the most influential nature and environmental activists in Estonia. He popularized these topics to a large audience. Especially his sound recordings of nature and his worldwide photo exhibitions have made him famous. He is also active as an influential publicist. Fred Jüssi has also traveled abroad many times as an expert and multiplier for the Estonian flora and fauna to give lectures.

Fred Jussi made a significant contribution to the Estonian independence movement from the mid-1980s by sensitizing people to the environmental destruction of the Soviet system.
