Fred Lipsius

Fred Lipsius (born November 19, 1943 in New York City ) is an American fusion musician ( saxophones , keyboards , arrangement ).

Lipsius grew up in the Bronx and began learning the clarinet when he was nine. In high school he switched to the alto and tenor saxophone ; During his further education at the Music and Art High School in Manhattan, he also learned piano before studying at the Berklee School of Music in 1961 and 1962 . He was then a member of Ronn Metcalfe's orchestra.

In 1967 he founded the jazz rock band Blood, Sweat & Tears together with Al Kooper and guitarist Steve Katz , where he stayed until 1971 and acted as musical director. Lipsius received a Grammy for his arrangement of the hit Spinning Wheel ; He also made the arrangements for the other hits You've Made Me so Very Happy and Hi-De-Ho . He then worked as a studio musician , among others with Paul Simon, and composed and arranged for advertising and for CBS Television. He was also involved in projects by Al Foster , George Mraz , Larry Willis and Randy Brecker . In 1982 he went on tour internationally with Simon and Garfunkel .

Since 1984 Lipsius has been a saxophone professor on the faculty of the Berklee College of Music , where he trained musicians such as Antonio Hart , Roy Hargrove and Danilo Perez . He also developed didactic materials and wrote several textbooks. In addition, he gave concerts with other members of the faculty and published records such as Better Believe It or Pure Classics under his own name .
