Freddy Kiwitt (born August 24, 1990 in Saclepea , Liberia , as Frederick Gleluo Kiwitt ) is a professional boxer of German-Liberian origin in the welterweight division . In 2019 he was the first German and the first Liberian boxer to combine the European Championship ( WBO ) and the African Championship ( ABU ). Kiwitt only started boxing at the comparatively late age of 18.

Life

Kiwitt was born in 1990 to a German and his Liberian wife in Saclepea , Liberia , shortly after the outbreak of the Liberian civil war . A few months later, to escape the war, the family went to Flensburg , where Kiwitt spent his childhood and youth. Today, Freddy Kiwitt lives with his fiancée in London for sporting reasons . They have a son together.

Career

Kiwitt started boxing at DGF Flensborg . Following his amateur career, he went to England , where he victoriously made his professional debut on November 23, 2013. In 2015 and 2016 he returned to Germany for some fights at Sauerland Event and boxed in the opening act for Arthur Abraham and Jürgen Brähmer , among others .

On February 22, 2019, Kiwitt won the WBO European Championship against the British Paddy Gallagher . He was able to bring his opponent to the ground twice in the traditional York Hall in London and was crowned the winner on points after ten rounds. The WBO then ranked him 12th in their welterweight ranking.

On 20 July 2019 he became the new African champions the ABU in the welterweight division after his opponent Samuel Turkson by technical knockout in round four in the Ghanaian capital Accra defeated.
